Job 28:20-28 NLT

But do people know where to find wisdom? Where can they find understanding?
21 It is hidden from the eyes of all humanity. Even the sharp-eyed birds in the
sky cannot discover it. Destruction and Death say, ‘We’ve heard only rumors of
where wisdom can be found.’ “God alone understands the way to wisdom; he
knows where it can be found, for he looks throughout the whole earth and sees
everything under the heavens. He decided how hard the winds should blow and
how much rain should fall. He made the laws for the rain and laid out a path for
the lightning. Then he saw wisdom and evaluated it. He set it in place and
examined it thoroughly. And this is what he says to all humanity: ‘The fear of the
Lord is true wisdom; to forsake evil is real understanding.’

Ephesians 5:15-17 NLT

So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise. Make
the most of every opportunity in these evil days. Don’t act thoughtlessly but
understand what the Lord wants you to do.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 NLT

All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make
us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and
teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do
every good work.

I. The Purpose of Proverbs

Proverbs 1:1-7 NLT

These are the proverbs of Solomon, David’s son, king of Israel. Their purpose is
to teach people wisdom and discipline, to help them understand the insights of
the wise. Their purpose is to teach people to live disciplined and successful lives,
to help them do what is right, just, and fair. These proverbs will give insight to the
simple, knowledge and discernment to the young. Let the wise listen to these
proverbs and become even wiser. Let those with understanding receive
guidance by exploring the meaning in these proverbs and parables, the words of
the wise and their riddles. Fear of the LORD is the foundation of true knowledge,
but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

Defining Wisdom

"Wisdom...may be defined as a realistic approach to the problems of life..."
- (20th Century Encyclopedia of Religious Knowledge)

"Wisdom is insight into the underlying causes and significance or consequence of
things, which insight enables one to apply to the best end the knowledge which
he has." - (Homer Hailey)

Wisdom is insight which helps you to decide what is the best thing to do.

Wisdom Comes from Three Sources:

1. Trial and error (Personal Experience)

2. Counsel from others (Proven Experience)
Wisdom Comes from Three Sources:

3. Directly from Jesus through Holy Spirit (Perfect Experience)

James 1:5-8 NLT
If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not
rebuke you for asking. But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God
alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave
of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. Such people should not expect

to receive anything from the Lord. Their loyalty is divided between God and the
world, and they are unstable in everything they do.

II. The Theme of Proverbs
Proverbs 1:7 NLT

Fear of the LORD is the foundation of true knowledge, but fools despise wisdom
and discipline. The Fear of the LORD is expressed in reverential submission to His will – (NET
Bible)

In Proverbs the Fear of the Lord Is:

It is the beginning of knowledge

It will cause one to hate evil

It will prolong life

It provides strong confidence and is a fountain of life

It prompts one to depart from evil

It leads to a satisfying life, and spares one from much evil

It is the way to riches, honor, and life!
