Scripture Readings

Pray for our leaders

The word “Church” is derived from the Greek word “ekklesia” meaning an assembly, meeting or congregation of people. In scripture, this word refers to the body of believers in Christ. We as sons and daughters of God have the privilege of receiving a spiritual family with which we gather, worship, grow and fulfill our individual, God-given calling to serve others.

The church is not defined or restricted by confines of a building. Rather, it is a living body with many parts operating in unity to fulfill its ultimate purpose to reflect the light and love of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:12-27). Our pursuit of unity as members of this sacred body is the testimony God uses as evidence of His love to a broken world (John 17:20-26). Revival in our neighborhoods, communities, and our world ought to begin with unified hearts within the church desperately praying for a powerful move of God.

Just as Christ is the head of the church, God ordains spiritual leaders to shepherd people within a church body. Our church leaders faithfully seek the Lord in all pursuits regarding both the church and personal matters. As members of one body, we should commit to diligently lifting up our leaders in prayer as they do so – praying for wisdom, protection, favor, provision, revelation, courage, endurance and strength (1 Timothy 2:1-7). This includes not only employed pastors and staff, but volunteer team leaders and coaches too. There is no authority not appointed by God (Romans 13:1), all needing God’s grace and guidance as they walk in the calling they have received to lead.

The world we live in does not need another open door to division – it needs godliness and to witness the fruits of the Spirit. What revival would God bring to this world if our church members and leaders were consumed by not social or political issues, but spiritual realities? Who, but the church and its leaders, are more responsible to boldly walk in togetherness according to the Truth? Because of God’s grace, we have come to know the great depths of His love. No matter our earthly position, we as believers have been called to pray and live in such a manner that people can’t help but acknowledge our source is not of this world.

It is through a unity of heart, mind, spirit and purpose that the body of Christ and its leaders ought to reflect God’s heart to others. Today, let’s pray for a unification of God’s church, His plan for humanity, and leaders with God’s Word. Let us honor our leaders not just with our words, but with our prayers for them, their hearts, minds, family, health, and that the Lord would continue to be the supplier of all of their needs.

Reflecting on the Word

  • What is the Holy Spirit revealing in your heart? Take a quiet moment to ask the Holy Spirit, “How are you calling me to pray for my church and its leaders?”
  • How can you better advocate for unity within the church body?
  • How might serving the church advance God’s plan to reach people in your community?

responding on the Word

  • How can you apply this to your life?
    • Perhaps even in your workplace and those that lead you there?

Prayer

Dear Lord, thank You for your provision in my life. Thank You for bringing me into a church family where I can receive love, growth and purpose. I pray You would open my eyes and heart to see Your people as You do. Give me wisdom and courage to fight for unity in my church and family, that I may testify of Your great love. I thank You God that you have given our church and its leaders all they need for life and godliness. Give us strength, wisdom, favor, humility and grace to walk in obedience to You. We love and honor You for all you’ve done and all You will do. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
