Noah: Did Just as God Commanded

Dive deeper into the foundational Bible stories many of us learned as kids back in Sunday School. Learn how we can apply these lessons to our lives today as we discover the strong faith found in each of these stories. This week, we learn from Noah as he was a man of faith who did just as God commanded him.

Hebrews 11:7 (NIV): By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family. By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that is in keeping with faith.

Genesis 6:5-8 (NIV): The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. 6 The Lord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled. 7 So the Lord said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground—for I regret that I have made them.” 8 But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.

Genesis 6:8-9 (NIV): “But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord. Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God.

Noah reveals some character qualities that are from God:

- Noah was a Godly Man

- Noah had a Good Testimony Before the People

- Noah walked with God

FROM NOAH we LEARN:

1. Walk with God Daily

2. Live a Lifestyle that Reflects God’s Ways

3. Trust and Obey

4. Don’t Give Up

FROM GOD we LEARN:

Lesson 1 - God Must Punish Sin.

Matthew 24:36-44 (NIV): 36 “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 37 As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; 39 and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 40 Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. 41 Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left. 42 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. 43 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

Lesson 2 - God is Patient but Judgment Will Come.

2 Peter 3:3-8 (NIV): 3 Above all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. 4 They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.” 5 But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water. 6 By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. 7 By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly. 8 But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. 9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

Lesson 3 - God is a Promise Keeper

Hebrews 10:23 (NLT): Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise.

Lesson 4 - God Rewards Those who Trust and Obey.

Psalms 1:1-3 (TLB): Oh, the joys of those who do not follow evil men’s advice, who do not hang around with sinners, scoffing at the things of God. 2 But they delight in doing everything God wants them to, and day and night are always meditating on his laws and thinking about ways to follow him more closely. 3 They are like trees along a riverbank bearing luscious fruit each season without fail. Their leaves shall never wither, and all they do shall prosper.
